These Frogs And Toads Having Almost Human-like Butt Cheeks Are Actually A Thing

All animals that have legs will have butts, as butt cheeks help animals to perform movement such as jumping, climbing, or crawling. Even though animals have butts, it can be a little challenging to see these directly due to the small sizes of some of these animals. Also, they will have to be at the right angle to prove whether or not there is indeed a round rear.

Generally, frogs do not possess well-defined butt cheeks like human beings do, since frogs do not sit on their rear ends at a 90 degrees angle like us humans. Rather, frogs tend to rest by laying on their bellies and all fours. While us humans need the extra cushioning on our rear ends, frogs in general do not. Most frogs usually have a slightly pointed or rounded vent (or butt) that do not have cheeks. A frog’s rear end is normally enveloped by their long legs that help them climb or swim.

Nonetheless, there are some frogs and toads out there that do have what may appear as human-like bum cheeks from an observational viewpoint. These butts are as well seen more often in toads than frogs, as they are fatter.

Most of these frogs and toads tend to be larger in size compared to a wide variety of frogs that are tiny. Smaller frogs generally do not have well-defined butt cheeks, or they are too small to observe. Some frogs have chubby hind legs that seem like a bum where their legs join together at their vent (which is the scientific term for a frog’s butt).

In animal anatomy, a cloaca is the single posterior orifice that serves as the only opening for the digestive, reproductive, and urinary tracts (if present) of many vertebrate animals. The vent is the external opening of the cloaca and is the exit point for feces, urine, and sperm or eggs depending on the sex of the frog.

An interesting fact about some frogs is that they use their butts to communicate. It can be a tactic used to defend their territories, like in the case of the Red-Eyed tree frog that shake their rear ends through a process called “tremulation”. If a male Red-Eyed Tree Frog enters the territory of another Red-Eyed Tree Frog, they may enter into a vibrational battle for the territory.

They may shake their rear ends, their whole bodies and the surrounding branches to deter other males. The dominant male winner gets to stay in the territory and waits for female frogs to mate with.

Researchers believe that the human butt helps us stay upright, and also to walk and run firmly. The thick gluteal muscles on the butt help to ease the transition to our legs when walking or when running, and produce a distinctive curve to the human’s posterior.

A person who is about to jump or stay in place will often execute a frog-like squat, not using the rear to be on the ground. Toads with larger bodies are not capable of leaping as high as frogs, and they are more likely to use their legs to walk around, not to hop.
